The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into Corey Lewandowski, a former senior adviser to President Donald Trump, regarding allegations that he improperly benefited from his government position. The inquiry focuses on his tenure as an aide at the Department of Homeland Security, where he is accused of using his role to influence contracting decisions for personal financial gain.
Criminal Referral Sparks Federal Inquiry
The federal probe originated from a criminal referral submitted by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General. The internal watchdog had been examining Lewandowski’s involvement in managing and awarding specific government contracts during the first year of the second Trump administration.
Lewandowski previously served as Trump’s initial campaign manager in 2015 and later as a senior adviser during the 2024 campaign before taking on his role within the Department of Homeland Security. While federal prosecutors are actively scrutinizing contracting activities associated with him, the Justice Department has not yet issued subpoenas or other formal legal demands in connection with the criminal probe.
Lewandowski’s attorney, Adam Trigg, has maintained his client’s innocence, stating that Lewandowski denies all allegations of wrongdoing.
President Trump Addresses the Probe
Speaking to reporters before departing the White House, President Trump stated that he had “no idea” why the Justice Department was investigating Lewandowski. Nevertheless, Trump stressed that federal workers are expected to maintain strict integrity and would face legal consequences if they engaged in misconduct.
“I want my people to be honest, and if they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted,” Trump said. Explaining his stance on official corruption, Trump added, “I view it as if people are not honest, they’re stealing from me as president, they’re stealing from me. So I want my people to be honest, and if they’re not honest, I’ll have my DOJ go and do whatever they have to do.”
