The gains were broad enough to give right-leaning parties a Senate majority, expand Bolsonaro’s strength in the Chamber of Deputies and carry conservative candidates to first-round victories in most of the governorships decided Sunday.

I Didn’t Expect to Notice Anything

Right-leaning parties are projected to control 49 of the Senate’s 81 seats. Left-wing parties hold 27, with five seats going to the center.

In the Chamber of Deputies, the Liberal Party alone won 121 of 513 seats. The leftist coalition led by Lula’s Workers’ Party secured 88.

Conservative and right-leaning candidates also won 13 of the 20 gubernatorial contests decided in the first round.

Those victories give the right leverage at every level: a Senate majority, the largest single party in the lower chamber and control of most governorships settled on Sunday. The numbers also mean that the next president will face a Congress far more favorable to conservative priorities than the one Lula expected to inherit.

Brazil’s voters built the foundation of a governing coalition, not a one-night protest.

The official Superior Electoral Court published the first-round results and audit data through its election-results system. The presidential contest now moves to a second round because neither candidate cleared 50 percent.

Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva advanced to a second-round presidential runoff on October 25, election authorities said on Sunday,

Contributed by @AZ_Intel_. pic.twitter.com/gm9Wd4tChY

— Open Source Intel (@Osint613) October 5, 2026

The stakes go far beyond one family name.

Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, and the elder Bolsonaro remains the central figure of Brazil’s conservative movement. Flávio also enters the runoff as an ally of President Trump and as the political heir to a movement built around public safety, national sovereignty, traditional values and resistance to the socialist left.

Lula still has a path to victory. A runoff resets the contest, and both campaigns will fight for voters who backed eliminated candidates.

Incumbency brings real advantages, so conservatives still have to finish the job on October 25.

But Lula now has to explain why a sitting president finished second while the opposition expanded its power across the legislature and the states.

That is the deeper problem for the left.

A president can sometimes survive a difficult election by assembling a temporary coalition. A political movement cannot easily dismiss a result that stretches from the presidential ballot to Congress and governors’ mansions.

Brazilian voters sent two men to a runoff while creating a stronger conservative bloc capable of checking Lula if he wins. If Bolsonaro prevails, that bloc gives him a powerful governing foundation.

The old narrative said the Bolsonaro movement had peaked, that the right was exhausted and that Lula had restored the natural order.

Sunday’s results shattered that story.

More than 56 million votes put Flávio Bolsonaro in first place. A historic congressional performance put the right in position to shape the next government.

Now Brazil gets one final choice on October 25—and the left knows it is in the fight of its life.

This is a Guest Post from our friends over at 100 Percent Fed Up. View the original article here.

Brazil’s voters just delivered a warning that the global left cannot afford to ignore.
